Standard: Conduct research and provide research and data-driven decisions about technology- enhanced teaching and learning
Example 1: As an educator, it is important to keep abreast of current research related to technology, and its impact upon teaching and learning. The Critical Issues in Technology course at CUW provided me with the opportunity to find and analyze research about today’s students, known as “digital natives.” In this annotated bibliography, I have listed twenty academic sources along with descriptions about who digital natives are, their characteristics, and suggestions for teachers for how to engage them in the classroom. This artifact meets Goal 5 because it shows that I can conduct research about technology in education, and critically analyze it for my research purposes in order to create a summary of best findings.
Example 2: Recently, my school district began a Bring Your Own Device Initiative and piloted Next Generation Learning Communities in several different settings. There is much research about 1:1 devices and how they can change the learning environment. Therefore, I searched for scholarly articles on 1:1 learning and implications for its implementation within the classroom. I found the two articles listed below, and read them so that I could have ideas to contribute during a staff meeting that was centered on the topic. One article challenges the idea of 1:1, and instead advocates for 1:2 computing. The other article discusses the different ways that dynamics and relationships change in a 1:1 environment, and ways to deal with those changes. Many of my colleagues were interested in what I had to say, so I later emailed the two articles to those individuals. This article meets Goal 5 because it shows that I can conduct data-driven research about 1:1 devices and their implications upon teaching and learning.
Example 3:
This artifact is a collection of research that was done about various topics related to student safety and security online. For this assignment, each group member had to research a given topic, and then write an annotated bibliography about what we found. My designated topic was Managing One’s Identity Online. Other topics include Supporting the Use of Web 2.0 in Schools While Protecting from Undue Harm, General Internet Security, Cyber-bullying, and Digital Citizenship. This artifact meets Goal 5 because it shows that I can conduct research related to safety and security online, and collaborate by sharing that information with my classmates to create a collective body of knowledge for other professionals to learn from.
